The Hidden Power of Group Fitness
We talk a lot about self-care as something we do alone—a quiet bath, journaling, or meditation. But some of the deepest forms of healing happen with others.
Group fitness classes offer far more than a workout. They’re a form of community-based self-regulation—a place where movement, music, and social connection work together to balance the nervous system.
So yesterday I did just that! I booked a 5:30pm Class to force myself off my screen and into a space of community self-regulation. Honestly, I was proud of myself, these days I’ve been spending a lot of time in front of the computer and in doing this I noticed feeling the shift from “therapist and business owner” mode into a “woman in motion” surrounded by diverse, uplifting energy. This re-centers me every time and keeps me coming back for more.
But I’ll be honest…it was a chilly night, the first few minutes of shuffling into class right on the dot, because that’s how I do half the time, and getting moving was a bit of a challenge. However, at the half-way point I found myself offering my 12lb weights to the friendly woman behind me, I’ll keep my 10lb dumbbells. Thank you very much. We were co-regulating giggling, complaining, huffing and puffing… just what we all needed.
Why This Works So Well
When you step into a group class, your body and brain start to sync with others through coregulation—the process of calming and energizing in connection.
Here’s what’s really happening:
- Movement burns off stress hormones like cortisol.
- Music activates dopamine and rhythmically organizes your body.
- Group connection releases oxytocin, the “bonding hormone,” countering loneliness.
- Accountability builds self-trust—you keep a promise to yourself to show up.
For those of us who work virtually or run our own businesses, these experiences are vital. They pull us out of isolation and remind us that healing happens in community, not just solitude.
Seasonal Self-Care: Why Movement Matters Even More Now
During the colder months, many people withdraw—both physically and emotionally. We move less, socialize less, and our energy dips. Scheduling group movement ahead of time helps you fight that pattern.
Even a single weekly class can boost mood, improve sleep, and reduce stress levels. It’s not just fitness—it’s preventive mental health care.(seriously)
During the holidays, I definitely notice my energy shift when I keep my movement appointments versus when I skip them =(
Your Turn: Find Your Self-Care Sweet Spot
Group fitness might not be everyone’s version of self-care—but everyone has a sweet spot that gives them the same layered benefits: movement, connection, accountability, and joy.
